Causes of Stress

There are a lot of areas in one's life where stress could prevail, whether it be workplace stress or school/college stress, financial pressure which would provide a lot of stress to an individual, social or family issues can be extreme personal stress. These factors that cause stress are known as stressors.

  • Work- A person's job can be a source of stress, especially because of the amount of time spent there each week.An overwhelming workload or a difficult boss can increase the level of stress. If a person does not like her job, has a long commute or has altercations with her co-workers, he/she can experience even more stress. It has been stated that getting fired from a job is the eighth most stressful life event.
  • Relationship Issues- Having relationship issues whether it is with your partner/ spouse, family members or your friends can be extremely stressful due to the close connection you have with those person(s), arguing or not talking to them due to a fight can really tax a person mentally and physically. Even if it is not you that is involved with the argument if it is between other people you know and you are indirectly involved this can be a root cause of a lot of stress.
  • Life Changes- It has been noted that both, positive and negative life changes are capable of conducting large amounts of stress.The death of a spouse is the most stressful life event according to the Holmes-Rahe Life Stress Inventory, and the death of a close relative is fifth. Whilst a positive event such as retiring is ranked as the tenth most stressful event.
